Can You Find What’s Different?

A legal battle has developed between two major spice brands regarding the way ground black pepper is packaged and presented to customers. Watkins Inc. has taken legal action against McCormick & Co., claiming that recent packaging changes may give shoppers a misleading impression about the amount of product they are receiving.

The lawsuit alleges that McCormick reduced the quantity of pepper inside its containers from 8 ounces to 6 ounces while keeping packaging that appears similar in size. Watkins argues that this could be considered a form of excess empty space, sometimes called slack-fill, which may cause customers to believe they are purchasing the same amount as before.

The companies use different approaches when designing their packaging. McCormick places its pepper in non-transparent containers, meaning customers cannot easily see the amount inside, while Watkins uses a smaller container for a comparable quantity of product. McCormick has responded by stating that its packaging follows required regulations and that the product weight is clearly provided on the label.

The dispute follows other consumer-related complaints involving similar packaging concerns that are also moving through the legal system. For now, the case remains unresolved, and no court decision has been reached.

The situation serves as a reminder that packaging plays an important role in how consumers evaluate products. Reading labels carefully, checking net weight, and comparing quantities can help shoppers make better-informed purchasing decisions.
