For some people, the unsettling feeling created by horror movies or creepy stories is nothing compared with what they have experienced in real life. Some of these strange encounters may have perfectly reasonable explanations, while others remain difficult to understand even years later. Here is a collection of real-life experiences that are eerie, confusing, and guaranteed to make you think twice.
- Years ago, my ex-boyfriend got out of bed and started exercising one morning. For some reason, he was working out in the bedroom that day. My eyes were still closed, but I could hear his breathing becoming heavier and increasingly strange. It got so loud that I finally became irritated. I turned over, opened my eyes, and prepared to tell him to be quiet—only to discover that no one was there. The breathing stopped instantly. I was terrified because everything had sounded completely real. A moment later, I walked outside the room and discovered that he had actually been upstairs taking a shower.
- I was home alone with my 2-year-old when I walked out of the bathroom and headed down the hallway. My son looked at me and smiled, and my heart immediately melted. Then his eyes shifted past my shoulder toward the dark hallway behind me. He smiled and said, “Hi.” I spun around so quickly that I nearly lost my balance. There was nobody there. It was just the two of us. I kept every light in the house on for the rest of the night.
- My roommates went out one evening while I stayed home because I was busy. Around 11 p.m., I heard someone trying to open my locked bedroom door. Assuming it was one of my roommates, I called out, “What do you want?” What I didn’t know was that they had all left around 10:30. Someone had broken through our back door and was apparently checking the rooms, most likely looking for things to steal. I still get chills thinking about what might have happened if I hadn’t locked my bedroom door.
- I once received a letter at my college mailbox with my full name and mailbox number written on it. It was a Christmas envelope covered in purple marker, postmarked from Nebraska, even though I didn’t know anyone there. There was no return address. Inside was just one thing: a coupon for a free Wendy’s Frosty.
- A few months after I was born, my parents bought an old house from a widow. She sold the property with much of her furniture still inside, although my parents eventually got rid of most of it. Every night around the same time, they began hearing a rocking chair downstairs and the lid of a trash can slamming shut—both objects they had already thrown away. This continued for several weeks. Then my aunt came to babysit me. She had no idea about the strange noises and became terrified when she heard them. She finally shouted, “You don’t live here anymore. You don’t belong in this world. Don’t come back!” After that night, my parents never heard those sounds again.
- My parents were separated, and it was my dad’s turn to have me at his house. We lived in the back portion of my great-uncle’s home, which was mostly one large kitchen, dining, and living area with a bedroom and bathroom at one end. The living room window was unusually high, so you had to stand on something to see through it. One day, I was home alone while my dad and great-uncle were working. The television suddenly went dark, and for a second I could see a reflection in the window. There was a man’s face staring directly at me. I turned toward the window, but he disappeared immediately. When my dad returned, he noticed footprints in the dirt outside and some firewood that had been knocked over.
- One day, I received a call from a private number. I missed it, but a voicemail was left behind. When I played it, I heard my brother and my mother having part of a conversation. At the time, my brother was in prison and was calling through the prison phone system. I texted my mom afterward, apologizing for missing the call and asking how she and my brother were doing. She had absolutely no idea what I was talking about. She hadn’t spoken to my brother that day. To this day, I still have the voicemail and have no explanation for why a private number called me using what sounded like an old recording of the two of them.
- We had a small “computer room” at the end of a hallway. One day, I was walking toward the bathroom when I noticed the computer screen casting a faint glow into the room. Suddenly, it looked as though someone walked directly in front of the screen, creating a shadow across the wall. I jumped and jokingly said, “Oh, you scared me.” Then I looked into the room. There was absolutely nobody there. I ran away and avoided that bathroom for several weeks.
- I woke up around 3 a.m. one night because I heard loud tapping outside my basement bedroom window. I assumed it was an animal, maybe a raccoon, and eventually managed to fall back asleep. The next morning, I mentioned the noise to my mother. She said she had heard something similar from the same side of the house. Unlike me, she had gotten up to investigate. From the front window, she saw a man emerge from the narrow space between our house and the neighbor’s. He stopped outside our home, stared at it for several seconds, removed a pair of latex gloves, and then walked away down the street. I can only assume he was looking for a way to break in. Thankfully, he never made it inside.
- When I was in fifth grade, I was walking toward the school bus just before sunrise. I had to travel about half a mile down a narrow road surrounded by woods. About halfway there, I suddenly found myself surrounded by eight or nine dogs. They weren’t wolves or wild animals—they were ordinary domestic dogs of different breeds. They didn’t bark or growl. They simply stood in a half-circle and blocked the road. Terrified, I turned around and ran home. When I looked back, the dogs were gone. Even now, I sometimes wonder whether they were somehow protecting me from something dangerous farther down the road.
- I once visited a friend’s summer house in Italy. Before entering the gated driveway, my friend asked me to get out of the car and check the mailbox. I opened it without realizing there was a bee nest inside. Within seconds, I was being swarmed. I was stung repeatedly, including inside my nose, around my eyelids, and even on my gums and tongue. Instead of enjoying an evening of pasta, I ended up making an emergency-room visit.
- My roommate and I lived in a farmhouse that was more than a century old. Plenty of strange things happened there, but one incident still stands out. We were sitting downstairs watching television when we suddenly heard a massive crash overhead. It sounded like glass breaking, and the ceiling seemed to shake. We both rushed upstairs expecting to find something destroyed. But when we got there, absolutely nothing was out of place.
- A few years ago, when I was still living with my parents, I was awakened almost every night for five or six months by loud, persistent meowing. Whenever I looked outside my window, I saw two completely white cats sitting on the wall in the front yard directly beneath it. They seemed to be having conversations with each other. The moment I opened the window shade, they would stop and stare directly at me. I found the whole thing incredibly creepy.
- My friend always jokes that his house is haunted. During a video call with him one night, the door behind him suddenly swung open. The door had been locked, and somehow it remained locked even after opening. I later witnessed the same thing when I stayed at his house. On another visit, he was talking in his sleep when he suddenly began giggling. He sat upright, pointed toward an empty part of the room, and said, “Look, they’re all here.” I was so freaked out that I slapped him awake.
- When I was in high school, I woke up in the middle of the night because my laptop suddenly started making the familiar sound of an incoming Skype call. I panicked because I didn’t want my family waking up and asking why my computer was ringing. I got out of bed and looked at the laptop. The screen was completely black, and I was almost certain I had shut it down earlier. I closed the laptop, and the ringing immediately stopped. I never discovered what caused it.
Children sometimes describe memories or experiences that seem strangely connected to lives they could not possibly remember. Whether these stories have ordinary explanations or something more mysterious behind them, they can still be fascinating and unsettling. Experiences like these leave us questioning what we think we know about memory, perception, and reality itself.
