Smallpox is widely regarded as one of the most destructive diseases in human history. Through an extensive worldwide vaccination effort, the World Health Organization (WHO) officially announced its eradication in 1980, making it the first and only human disease to be completely eliminated through vaccination.
Although smallpox is no longer naturally circulating among people, scientists continue to examine the virus, its history, and its long-term impact. Researchers have discovered fragments of smallpox-related genetic material in some well-preserved historical remains, including mummified bodies and remains preserved in frozen conditions. However, the presence of viral DNA does not necessarily mean that a living, infectious virus remains.
Scientific interest in smallpox has also increased as climate change causes frozen landscapes and ancient burial areas to thaw, particularly in regions affected by melting permafrost. Past research has shown that thawing environments can sometimes reveal previously trapped microorganisms, leading experts to monitor these changes carefully. Still, there is currently no evidence that smallpox has returned from frozen remains.
One reason smallpox was so difficult to control historically was that its early symptoms often looked similar to other illnesses. As the infection progressed, it developed into a characteristic rash followed by fluid-filled blisters that later became scabs. Historical documents and preserved remains have provided researchers with valuable information about how the disease spread and affected populations.
Evidence indicates that smallpox existed for thousands of years, with researchers finding signs of the disease in ancient remains. Before vaccines were introduced, smallpox caused millions of deaths around the world and played a major role in shaping human history.
Today, smallpox remains eradicated. Scientists continue to study the virus to strengthen global health preparedness, improve understanding of infectious diseases, and ensure that lessons from the past continue to guide modern disease prevention efforts.
