I got home completely drained after a long day at work. As I stepped inside, I noticed the soft glow of the living room lamp and the faint sound of the TV coming from the bedroom. My boyfriend, Matt, was asleep on the couch, which immediately struck me as unusual.
He normally greeted me with a hug or a kiss, but tonight he was fast asleep. I brushed off the uneasy feeling and headed to the bathroom, hoping a hot shower would help me relax. What happened next completely shattered my sense of safety.
As I entered the bathroom, I froze. A shadow was moving behind the shower curtain. My instincts kicked in, and I stumbled backward, my heart racing.
“Matt?!” I shouted in panic. Before I could process anything, the curtain suddenly flew open—and a man I had never seen before stood there, water dripping from his skin as he stepped out of the shower.
I screamed and ran out, adrenaline surging through me. “There’s someone in the house!” I yelled as I reached Matt, who had just woken up. The moment I told him, his face went completely pale.
Without hesitation, he grabbed my arm and rushed me toward the door. “Get in the car, lock it, and call 911—now!” he ordered, his voice shaking.
Confused and terrified, I obeyed, gripping the keys with trembling hands as I tried to process what I had just seen. Who was that man? Why was he in our bathroom?
Later, after the police arrived and secured the situation, the truth came out.
The man hadn’t just broken in randomly—he had been hiding in the guest room for days without either of us noticing. But what disturbed me even more was Matt’s reaction when I asked how he knew exactly what to do.
His pale expression and nervous silence told me everything I needed to know: the intruder wasn’t a stranger to him. He had known him from his past—a past he had never told me about.
Even though the police confirmed the danger had been real and Matt’s quick thinking likely saved us, I sat alone afterward unable to shake the feeling that this wasn’t the only secret being kept from me.
