A mother from the Gold Coast ignited a major online discussion after posting about her baby’s medical treatment on social media. Brooke Atkins decided to start laser therapy for her infant son, Kingsley Atkins, who was born with a large port-wine stain birthmark across part of his face.
While this type of birthmark is usually harmless, doctors explained that it can sometimes be linked to serious health conditions such as Sturge-Weber syndrome and glaucoma. Due to these potential risks, medical specialists advised beginning laser treatment early to help manage the condition and reduce the chance of complications as the child grows.
After Brooke shared videos of the treatment online, however, she faced heavy criticism from some viewers who assumed the procedure was purely cosmetic. A number of commenters even labeled her a “monster,” claiming she was subjecting her baby to unnecessary pain.
In response, Brooke clarified that the decision was based entirely on medical advice and her concern for her son’s health. She stressed that doctors recommended the treatment to protect his long-term well-being. Alongside the criticism, many supporters have also reached out with messages of encouragement, acknowledging that her choice was made with her child’s future health and quality of life in mind.
