Charity and Kathleen Lincoln were born on February 21, 2000, in Seattle, as extremely rare conjoined twins. They were connected from the chest to the pelvis, each with her own upper body but sharing several vital organs, including parts of the liver, intestines, and pelvic structures. They also had a third, underdeveloped leg attached to their bodies, which was not functional.
From the moment they were born, doctors knew their case would be very complex. For the girls to have any chance of living independent lives, they would eventually need to be separated. However, because their bodies were so closely connected internally, the surgery would be extremely risky and require careful planning.
When Charity and Kathleen were about seven months old, a specialized team at Seattle Children’s Hospital prepared for the challenging procedure. Around thirty medical experts—including surgeons, orthopedic specialists, urologists, and anesthesiologists—worked together to plan every detail.
