When Lana joined our department, she was soft-spoken and kept entirely to herself. Wearing simple clothes and staying quiet during meetings, she quickly became an easy target for judgment. Many assumed she wouldn’t last, and a few even mocked her behind her back.
I couldn’t stand how others treated her, so I made a simple choice—I welcomed her. We ate lunch together, I helped her learn our software systems, and I walked her through the unwritten rules that made our office easier to navigate. She worked remarkably hard, asked insightful questions, and remained resilient even when her ideas were dismissed.
Her dedication paid off quickly. Within months, she was one of our top performers, and about a year later, she received a promotion that made her my supervisor. I was genuinely thrilled for her, even as the same colleagues who used to laugh at her suddenly tried to become her best friend.
Then my world fell apart.
Without warning, HR sent an email terminating my employment immediately over supposed departmental procedural errors. There was no discussion, no explanation, and zero opportunity to defend myself. Years of dedicated service were erased in an instant.
That night, as I sat at home trying to make sense of the sudden firing, Lana unexpectedly knocked on my door.
As soon as she came inside, she confessed the truth. She hadn’t been hired as a standard employee.
Instead, the parent corporation had placed her in our office to conduct a covert internal investigation. Her secret mission was to quietly observe daily operations and gather proof of financial misconduct and unethical practices.
I was completely stunned.

Looking back, my whole career transformed because of one simple choice. I chose to help someone who was being overlooked rather than joining those who dismissed her.
