I Gave Up Everything to Help My Husband Chase His Dream, Only to Discover He Was Using It to Fund a Life With Another Woman.

I sold my parents’ house and even gave up my car to help my husband chase his dream of starting a farm. I trusted him completely and believed every sacrifice was worth it. But one unexpected phone call on my way to the bank made me question whether I even knew the man I was building a future with.

That morning, I sat on the edge of our old, worn-out bed and watched Jake sleep. He looked so calm, almost untouched by the stress of unpaid bills and constant financial pressure.

I reached over and gently shook his shoulder.

“Jake, wake up. I need to take the money to the bank today like we planned.”

He slowly opened his eyes and smiled.

“Morning, baby. You’re awake early again?”

I sighed.

“Who else is going to handle everything?”

I walked into the kitchen and started making his coffee, giving him another chance to imagine the farm he talked about every single day. A few minutes later, he joined me, grabbed his mug, and sat across from me.

“Martha, you know how much I love you, right?” he said. “You’re my biggest supporter. You’re everything I have.”

I smiled.

“Tell me again what we’re building.”

Jake’s face lit up. He pushed his coffee aside and spread his arms wide as if he could already see the land in front of him.

“Our own farm. Fresh milk. Natural products. No chemicals. People everywhere will know our name. We’ll build something that lasts.”

“And Benny’s school?” I asked. “When will we finally be able to give him something better?”

“Soon, baby. Soon. Everything will fall into place.”

His eyes moved toward the envelope sitting on the shelf.

“You already sold the lake house. That was the hardest step.”

I looked away.

That house was the last thing I had left from my parents. But I had convinced myself that helping Jake’s dream become reality mattered more.

“And now your money is the final step,” he said.

I looked at the envelope again.

“I’ll transfer it into your account today.”

Jake smiled and reached for my hand.

“I love you. No one has ever believed in me the way you do.”

“Because we’re family,” I said. “You promised me this farm was our dream.”

“Of course it is.”

He kissed my forehead, and for a moment, I believed him.

I truly thought I was helping my husband create a better future.

I had no idea that just ten minutes later, one phone call would destroy everything I thought I knew.

I walked toward the bus stop with the envelope safely inside my bag. The cold morning air surrounded me as I imagined handing over the money and finally watching Jake’s dream begin.

Then my phone rang.

I looked down.

The name on the screen said:

Alex.

I didn’t recognize it, but I answered.

“Hey, baby…”

A woman’s voice greeted me.

Warm.

Familiar.

Too affectionate.

“You’re not answering. Did she finally leave? I’ve been waiting for you all night.”

My heart stopped.

My hands started shaking.

I ended the call immediately.

What had just happened?

Then I looked down at the phone in my hand.

The cracked corner.

The worn case.

The scratches.

This wasn’t my phone.

“Jake…”

I emptied my bag.

And then I realized.

We had accidentally switched phones before leaving the house.

I was holding his.

Alex.

Her voice replayed in my mind.

The bank suddenly didn’t matter anymore.

I opened his messages.

“See you in thirty minutes.”

“Miss you already.”

Everything clicked.

Ten minutes later, I quietly returned home and placed Jake’s phone back on the kitchen table.

Right where he left it.

A moment later, he walked in.

“There you are,” he said. “I was looking everywhere for my phone.”

“It was on the table.”

He smiled.

“You’re a lifesaver.”

Not anymore.

I watched him type a quick message before grabbing his things.

“I’ll be late tonight. Meetings. Don’t wait up.”

Meetings.

Sure.

The moment he drove away, I called a taxi and followed him.

The car stopped outside a small house with green shutters.

Through the window, I heard a woman laughing.

Then I saw Jake.

He wrapped his arms around a blonde woman.

“Okay, hubby,” she said playfully. “Let’s finish our game.”

My stomach turned.

I waited until Jake left.

Then I stepped out of the taxi and walked toward the house.

The woman opened the door.

She looked young, confused, and completely unaware of what was coming.

“Can I help you?”

I took a deep breath.

“Yes. I’m Jake’s wife.”

Her face changed instantly.

“His wife?”

“That’s right. Martha. The woman paying the bills. The woman helping him build the farm he claims is our dream.”

She stared at me.

Then she opened the door wider.

“Come inside.”

Her hands shook.

“Are you here to yell at me?”

“No,” I said. “I need to know who you are.”

She looked down.

“I’m the woman he’s going to marry.”

My chest tightened.

“He told you that?”

“Yes. He said he was leaving you. He said you were difficult and that I was the person who truly understood him.”

“Did he mention money?”

Her silence answered before her words did.

“He said he needed money for the divorce. Legal fees. Settlements.”

I laughed bitterly.

“I sold my parents’ house for him. I sold everything because I believed in his dream.”

Her expression changed.

“I sold my shares in my father’s company because he promised we would start over together.”

We stared at each other.

Two strangers realizing we had both been deceived by the same person.

“Why did he hide you?” I asked.

She swallowed.

“I don’t know.”

Then I looked at her.

“But we can find out.”

She wiped her tears.

“What do we do?”

I smiled slightly.

“We let him think he still has both of us.”

And that was exactly what we did.

I told Jake the money had been transferred.

“Everything is ready,” I said.

Alex told him she would have her money soon too.

He believed both of us.

That was his mistake.

We arranged a dinner.

But Jake didn’t know I would be there.

Hidden.

Watching.

I arrived early, wearing an old coat, a blonde wig, and a scarf covering my face.

I sat behind their table and waited.

Jake arrived smiling.

“Hey, beautiful,” he said to Alex. “Sorry I’m late. You look amazing.”

Of course she did.

She was his newest opportunity.

Alex didn’t smile.

“I want to talk about the money.”

Jake’s expression changed.

“We already discussed this.”

“I just want to understand where it’s going.”

He sighed.

“It’s for us. I need to handle Martha. The divorce will cost a lot.”

I almost laughed.

He actually thought I was the problem.

Alex continued.

“So you’re really leaving her?”

“Of course,” Jake said. “I’m doing all of this for us.”

Her napkin dropped.

Our signal.

I stood up.

“Hi, honey.”

Jake froze.

I removed the wig and placed it on the table.

“Looks like your biggest deal is falling apart.”

His face turned pale.

“Martha?”

Alex smiled.

“Surprise. Your wife and your girlfriend finally agree on something.”

Jake tried to recover.

“You both would have given me money. Who’s the fool here?”

Alex shook her head.

“Not me. You’re not getting anything from me.”

Jake looked at me.

“But Martha already sent everything.”

I stepped closer.

“No, Jake. I didn’t send you a single dollar.”

He went silent.

“Your phone exposed you. One mistake was all it took.”

I placed a dollar on the table.

“Dinner’s on me. That’s all you’re getting.”

Alex grabbed her coat.

“We’re getting pizza instead. Something real.”

We walked away together.

Outside, she laughed.

“Did you ever imagine this happening?”

“Never.”

She smiled.

“But I guess we make a pretty good team.”

I laughed.

“Extra cheese?”

“Definitely.”

And we walked down the street together.

Two women who had given everything to someone who didn’t deserve it.

But this time, we weren’t losing anything.

We were taking ourselves back.
