Before becoming a royal figure and global celebrity, Meghan Markle was a biracial girl growing up in Los Angeles, learning to navigate her identity in a world that often made her feel like she didn’t fully belong. With a Black mother and a white father, she frequently encountered curious questions and assumptions from strangers, especially when she was out with her mom. Meghan lived with both parents until she was nine, after which she moved in with her father full-time, growing up with a lot of independence, simple meals, and modest comforts.
Even though there are differing perspectives about what her childhood was like, Meghan has spoken about feeling different because of her race, social background, and how she saw herself. As a teenager, she struggled with insecurity and often felt like an outsider. She described herself as a “nerd,” choosing to focus on academics and being “the smart one” rather than trying to be the popular girl. Still, her determination showed early — at just 11 years old, she famously wrote letters that helped challenge a sexist television advertisement.
A lottery win by her father helped cover the cost of private schooling, opening doors that allowed Meghan to pursue her dream of acting. While chasing that goal, she worked various small jobs — from babysitting to selling donuts — while trying to break into the entertainment industry. Hollywood, however, presented its own obstacles. Because of her mixed heritage, casting agents often viewed her as “not white enough” or “not Black enough” for many roles. By her early thirties, she had reached a point of greater self-acceptance, later saying that happiness sometimes takes time to find.
Her breakthrough came when she starred in the legal drama Suits. In 2018, she married Prince Harry and became the Duchess of Sussex. Together they welcomed two children, Prince Archie of Sussex and Princess Lilibet of Sussex.
Life connected to the royal family also brought serious personal challenges. Meghan later revealed she experienced postpartum preeclampsia after childbirth and suffered a miscarriage — painful experiences she has spoken about publicly in hopes of supporting others facing similar struggles.
Her life story — from modest meals and ordinary beginnings to royal engagements — challenges the traditional fairy-tale narrative. Today, Meghan’s journey reflects resilience, identity, and the effort to create space for herself where she once felt overlooked. As a mother, advocate, and podcast host, she now shares her story openly and on her own terms, speaking to anyone who has ever felt unseen.
