I Won’t Let My Father’s Widow Live Rent-Free in the House He Left Me

Inheritance disputes can spiral out of control in an instant. After her father passed away, Bonnie inherited the family home and gave her stepmother an ultimatum: pay rent using the $12,000 her father had left her, or move out. When her stepmother refused, Bonnie proceeded with eviction.

However, what initially seemed like a simple situation quickly became far more complicated, leaving Bonnie confused and seeking guidance. This is her account:

My father died and left me his house. I told his wife she could either pay rent using the $12k he left her or move in with her son.

She replied, “This was my home for years! Shame on you!” so I had no choice but to evict her. Years passed, and she never reached out again.

Yesterday, she contacted me and insisted we meet. I was shocked when I learned the small apartment she currently lives in was actually purchased by my father. She explained that he used the remainder of his savings to secure it for her before he died, ensuring she would have somewhere safe to go if she was ever forced out.

According to her, she signed an agreement stating that the apartment would go to me after her death if she remained in the home she shared with my father. However, if she was evicted, she was free to leave it to anyone—and now she plans to pass it on to her son. After the initial shock wore off, I felt furious.

I was only trying to protect what was legally mine. She had financial means and could have contributed rent; the home wasn’t meant to be a free place to stay. What hurts most is realizing I was never told about this arrangement, and now a property my father paid for will go to her son instead of me.

I don’t know what I should do next.
