A family set out early on a Friday morning, excited to attend a graduation celebration. Meanwhile, relatives waiting at the destination had no idea that instead of welcoming them, they would soon be desperately searching for answers. Somewhere along the journey, tragedy had struck.
On May 22, 2026, 38-year-old Sergio Leon, his 39-year-old wife Herminia Hernandez, their four-year-old twin daughters Nyah and Naomi, and Sergio’s 36-year-old brother Antonio Leon left Fresno, California, heading to Arizona for a family member’s graduation ceremony. Tragically, none of them ever arrived.
What Were They Looking Forward to That Day?
Graduations have a way of bringing loved ones together. Families travel long distances, reserve seats, and fill group chats with excitement before the event even begins. That Friday morning was supposed to be one of those happy occasions for the Leon family.
A cousin had already reached the ceremony venue in Arizona and expected the rest of the family to arrive shortly afterward. As guests began filing in, concern quickly replaced anticipation.
According to family members, everyone else started showing up, but Sergio, Antonio, Herminia, Nyah, and Naomi never appeared.
Phone calls went unanswered. Their seats remained empty.
What their relatives didn’t yet know was that the family had already been involved in a devastating crash in a remote stretch of the Mojave Desert.
Where Did the Tragedy Occur?
At approximately 8:20 a.m., officers from the California Highway Patrol responded to a collision on eastbound State Route 62 near Cadiz Road in the small desert community of Freda.
Located roughly 40 miles west of the Arizona border and near the eastern edge of Joshua Tree National Park, the area is surrounded by long stretches of isolated highway and harsh desert terrain.
Authorities reported that a vehicle driven by 60-year-old Holly Chafey lost control, left the roadway, then re-entered traffic and crossed over the double-yellow lines into oncoming traffic. Her vehicle struck the Leon family’s car in a direct side-impact collision.
Both vehicles burst into flames immediately after impact.
A third vehicle became involved in the incident, but all four occupants escaped unharmed.
Of the ten people involved overall, six lost their lives at the scene. Those killed included the entire Leon family and Chafey.
Who Were the Victims Behind the Headlines?
The five members of the Leon family were much more than names in a news report.
They were a close-knit family bound by years of shared memories, traditions, and unwavering support for one another. Loved ones described them as deeply connected and devoted to family.
Sergio was remembered as a hardworking and generous man who found joy in life’s simple moments. He made time for family and friends and had a gift for making ordinary days feel special.
Antonio, his younger brother, was known as the dependable one—the family member people could always count on. His calm presence and steady support brought comfort and stability to those around him.
Herminia was celebrated for her warmth and kindness. Family members recalled her ability to make everyone feel welcome, cared for, and valued. Her love for her family defined much of who she was.
Nyah and Naomi, the family’s four-year-old twins, had recently completed Pre-K and were preparing for their own graduation ceremony later that same week.
Relatives described the girls as inseparable, full of energy, and capable of brightening any room they entered. Though their lives were just beginning, they left a lasting impact on everyone who knew them.
The family also shared a playful football rivalry. Herminia proudly supported the San Francisco 49ers, while Sergio and Antonio remained loyal fans of the Las Vegas Raiders.
Their friendly debates over football became a cherished tradition at family gatherings—a small but meaningful reflection of the joy they found in spending time together.
How Is the Family Coping?
In the aftermath of the tragedy, a GoFundMe campaign was launched by Cesar Sanchez, a nephew and godson of the victims. He worked closely with immediate family members to ensure transparency regarding all donations.
The community response was overwhelming. More than 500 donors contributed over $38,700 toward a $50,000 fundraising goal.
Funds are being distributed among immediate family members to help with expenses and provide support during an incredibly difficult period.
Family members expressed gratitude for every donation, prayer, and message of support, sharing that each act of kindness has provided comfort and strength as they navigate their grief.
What began as a journey to celebrate a milestone ended in unimaginable loss. The family waiting to share a joyful day together now carries the memory of those they loved and lost.
