Trump’s response about his favorite Bible verse reemerges after pastor claims he knows the Bible better than the Pope.

Video of Donald Trump seeming unsure while talking about Christianity has resurfaced after a pastor claimed the president understands the Bible better than the Pope.

The renewed focus follows several recent controversies involving Trump and religion, including public disagreements with the Pope, an AI-generated image portraying him as Jesus, and a warning directed at Iran that concluded with the phrase “praise be to Allah.”

Although Trump received strong backing from Evangelical Christians during the 2024 election, critics have often questioned his familiarity with the Bible. They frequently point to moments such as his mispronunciation of “2 Corinthians” and his inability to clearly answer questions about his favorite Bible verse.

In a Bloomberg interview during his first presidential campaign, Trump declined to name a favorite Bible passage, saying it was a personal matter he preferred not to discuss. When asked whether he favored the Old or New Testament, he responded that he appreciated both equally and called the Bible “incredible.”

The interview clip began circulating again after MAGA-aligned pastor Robert Jeffress defended Trump, arguing that the former president understood biblical teachings on government better than the Pope.

Jeffress made the remark shortly after a 22-foot golden statue of Trump was unveiled and blessed by a pastor at one of Trump’s golf clubs in Florida.

The statue quickly drew criticism, with many comparing it to a religious idol. Pastor Mark Burns, who blessed the monument, dismissed those claims, saying it was not meant to resemble a “golden calf.” Instead, he described it as a representation of resilience, patriotism, freedom, strength, and the future of America.

Critics, however, argued that erecting a massive golden statue of a political figure inevitably invited comparisons to biblical warnings about idol worship. Many also questioned why some religious leaders continued defending Trump’s ties to Christianity while supporting displays like this.

In recent weeks, Trump has also made efforts to strengthen his religious image. At the end of April, he released a video filmed in the Oval Office where he read a verse from 2 Chronicles while placing his hands on a Bible. The verse, widely embraced by many conservatives, focuses on humility, prayer, repentance, and healing the nation.

Still, the resurfaced interview and debate surrounding the golden statue have only added to ongoing discussions about Trump’s relationship with Christianity. While supporters continue to defend him, critics say his past difficulty answering basic Bible questions weakens claims that he has a stronger understanding of Christianity than the Pope.
