What neighbors first noticed weren’t the worst details, but the early warning signs—cars lining the street, teenagers gathering at a short-term rental, and a growing sense that the night was getting out of control.
What started as a post-prom gathering at a yellow rental home on Indianapolis’ near north side ended in a scene residents say they will never forget. By morning, the quiet street was marked by bullet damage, scattered decorations, and a lingering question: how did a celebration turn into violence?
Reports from WTHR 13 News state that the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department responded shortly before 1 a.m. on May 3, 2026, to the 4000 block of North Park Avenue after reports of a shooting. Officers found 38-year-old Brittany Marie Members critically injured. She was taken to the hospital but later died. Shortly after, two additional gunshot victims arrived at Methodist Hospital, both connected to the same incident, and another person was injured while fleeing the scene.
Investigators believe the shooting happened during a post-prom party at a short-term rental that had drawn a large crowd, including many teenagers.
At first, the basic facts were already disturbing: a rented house, a late-night celebration, and sudden gunfire. But as neighbors shared their experiences, the situation became even more unsettling.
One resident, Jack Anderson, said he was awakened by gunshots shortly after 1 a.m. He described hearing what he believed were dozens of shots and seeing teenagers running from the home in panic. He said the noise was so intense it woke his children, and some neighbors even took frightened teens into their homes until police arrived.
Others described a normally quiet, family-oriented neighborhood suddenly turned chaotic. While many residents called the incident an isolated tragedy, the damage was undeniable. The home where the party took place was left with shattered windows and bullet holes, while prom decorations remained scattered across the property among police markers.
Across the street, neighbor Salome Mitchell reported that a stray bullet passed through his home, entering through a front window, crossing his living room, and stopping at a back door. He said he had just told his son to go to sleep shortly before the shooting began and later described the experience as feeling like a war zone.
Mitchell also noted that the property had recently become a rental and had not caused issues before that night, though the large gathering and heavy traffic raised concern as the evening went on.
According to additional reporting, the victim’s daughter had hosted the post-prom event at the rental home. Witnesses described gunfire erupting after an SUV arrived and shots were fired toward the house. Authorities recovered roughly 100 shell casings from multiple firearms, suggesting several weapons were involved.
Some reports also indicated gunfire came from both outside attackers and individuals at the gathering. A photo from earlier in the night reportedly showed partygoers posing with firearms near decorations, including large semi-automatic weapons.
Another neighbor, Brandi Mitchell, said she woke to a bullet striking her home and described the night as chaotic and terrifying, comparing it to something out of a war scene. She and others said the lack of supervision and the growing crowd added to their concern before the shooting occurred.
In the aftermath, residents reported that decorations from the party were removed nearly a day later, while questions about accountability and safety continued to grow.
City officials said violence interruption teams would engage with those affected to reduce the risk of retaliation and further incidents. They also noted that seasonal gatherings and short-term rentals can make it difficult to monitor large, unsupervised parties.
Officials added that the property owner may face penalties for failing to properly register the rental.
Perhaps the most disturbing moment came from nearby Ring camera footage, which reportedly showed a vehicle passing through the street just before and during the gunfire, briefly reversing as shots continued—capturing how quickly the scene turned from ordinary to dangerous.
For residents, the tragedy underscored how rapidly a single event can ripple through an entire community. Many expressed grief, shock, and frustration, calling the violence senseless and preventable.
In the days that followed, a GoFundMe campaign was launched to honor Brittany Marie Members, remembering her as a beloved and compassionate presence whose loss left a deep void in the lives of those who knew her.
Police continue to ask for public assistance as the investigation remains ongoing, with no suspect or clear motive publicly confirmed.
