Discussion around proposals by Donald Trump—including ideas like acquiring Greenland or signaling possible military actions—has renewed public anxiety about a potential U.S. draft. At the same time, recent U.S. strikes in Venezuela and talk of tensions with Iran have fueled fears of a wider conflict. This has led to a surge in online searches such as “World War III” and “U.S. draft age and rules,” as people try to understand what could happen if global tensions escalate.
Currently, the United States does not enforce an active draft, but it still has the legal structure to reinstate one during a national emergency. The draft officially ended in 1973 after the Vietnam War, and since then the military has relied on volunteers. However, federal law still allows conscription to be reintroduced if approved by Congress and the president.
Because several generations have grown up without experiencing conscription, many Americans are unfamiliar with how the system would work today. If reactivated, the draft would likely begin with men turning 20, followed by those aged 21 through 25, and then 19- and 18-year-olds if more personnel were required. Selection would be determined through a randomized lottery system based on birth dates.
Registration with the Selective Service is already mandatory for most male U.S. residents between ages 18 and 25, including citizens, immigrants, refugees, and asylum seekers. Some exceptions apply, such as for certain institutionalized individuals or specific public roles, and deferments may be available in limited cases.
Under current law, women are not required to register, though that issue has been debated in Congress and would require legal changes to implement. Failing to register by age 26 is illegal; while criminal enforcement is rare, consequences can include fines, possible imprisonment, and loss of eligibility for certain federal jobs and benefits.
