What a ‘Bleach’ Stain on Your Underwear Could Indicate

If you’ve ever taken underwear out of the laundry only to spot unusual light patches or fading, you’re not alone. Many women notice this, but few realize the true cause.

It’s easy to blame your washing machine or detergent, but the real reason is completely natural—your own body.

According to a female OB-GYN known on TikTok as “The Vag Doc,” these so-called “bleach” spots are caused by the acidity of vaginal discharge.

The Science Behind It

In a viral video, The Vag Doc explained that the vagina maintains a delicate balance of bacteria, mainly lactobacilli, which keeps the area healthy and prevents infections. This creates an acidic environment crucial for overall vaginal health.

“That acidity is what helps maintain your vaginal microbiome,” she said. Interestingly, it’s also responsible for lightening underwear over time. More acidic discharge can strip fabric dye, leaving lighter patches.

Is It a Problem?

The good news: this bleaching is normal and often a sign your vaginal pH is healthy. “Discoloration in underwear is completely natural, so there’s no need to panic,” The Vag Doc reassured viewers.

Some women may never notice bleaching, and that’s normal too. Variations in acidity, fabric type, color, and dye all affect whether the effect appears.

When to Seek Medical Advice

While natural discharge can cause fading, changes in odor, color, or texture could indicate an infection or health issue. The Cleveland Clinic advises consulting a doctor if you notice these signs.

Otherwise, those light patches? Just your body doing its job.
