“Actor Known for ‘Gomer Pyle’ Passes Away at Age 94”

Ronald “Ronnie” Schell, Beloved Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C. Actor, Dies at 94

Ronald “Ronnie” Ralph Schell, the veteran actor and comedian best remembered for portraying Duke Slater on the classic 1960s sitcom Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C., passed away from natural causes on June 12 at UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles. He was 94 years old.

Born on December 23, 1931, in Richmond, Schell launched his entertainment career as a stand-up comedian while attending San Francisco State University. After performing at San Francisco’s renowned Purple Onion nightclub, he toured comedy venues nationwide and later became a regular performer in Las Vegas.

Schell made his television debut on You Bet Your Life, hosted by Groucho Marx. His breakthrough came when he was cast as Duke Slater, the loyal friend of Gomer Pyle, on Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C. from 1964 to 1969. The popular sitcom, a spinoff of The Andy Griffith Show, followed the adventures of the kind-hearted and naïve Gomer Pyle after he joined the U.S. Marine Corps.

The series starred Jim Nabors as Gomer and Frank Sutton as the fiery drill instructor Sergeant Vince Carter. Much of the show’s humor stemmed from the contrast between Gomer’s gentle nature and Carter’s strict military demeanor. Over time, the characters developed a genuine friendship, helping make the series one of television’s most enduring military comedies.

Throughout a career that spanned more than 60 years, Schell appeared in nearly 150 television productions, including That Girl, Sanford and Son, Charlie’s Angels, Mork & Mindy, General Hospital, and Phil of the Future. He also featured in more than 20 films, including Disney favorites such as Gus, The Shaggy D.A., and The Devil and Max Devlin.

Beyond live-action roles, Schell enjoyed a successful career as a voice actor, contributing to animated projects including Jetsons: The Movie and Rover Dangerfield. He remained active in entertainment well into his later years, appearing in the 2019 Off-Broadway musical comedy revue Don’t Leave It All to Your Children!.

Schell is survived by his wife, Janet, his sons Gregory and Christian, and his granddaughter, Chiara.
