The 43-year-old’s death was confirmed by the Okanogan County Sheriff’s Office (OCCO) on May 31, 2026, several days after search efforts began near Oroville.
According to officials, private citizens searching along the Okanogan River discovered a body on May 30. After retrieving it from the water, authorities later confirmed it was Matt.
His remains were transferred to the Okanogan County Coroner for further examination.
As investigators continue working to determine the cause and manner of death, family members have begun sharing emotional updates about the days leading up to the discovery.
Bear Brown Shares a Painful Family Update
After the confirmation, Matt’s brother Bear Brown spoke in a TikTok video, confirming the identification of the body and expressing his grief.
He also shared that their younger brother, Noah Brown, was among the first to see the body after recovery and assisted authorities in identifying Matt.
Bear suggested that the situation may have been self-inflicted, though he emphasized that the official determination would come from the coroner. He also mentioned Matt’s long struggle with addiction and asked the public to be respectful during the family’s mourning.

Before the body was identified, authorities received a concerning 911 call from the river area near Oroville.
The caller reported seeing a man sitting in shallow water and then suddenly noticing him face down and drifting in the current moments later.
Emergency crews, including law enforcement, fire services, and rescue teams, launched an immediate search using boats, drones, and watercraft, but were unable to locate the individual at the time.
A firearm was later recovered from the water near where the man was last seen. The search was eventually suspended due to dangerous conditions, including strong currents and poor visibility caused by runoff and debris.
Two days later, private searchers discovered a body in the river, which was later confirmed to be Matt.
