Damon used to say that marrying Evie saved his life. At twenty-five, he was drowning in debt, unable to find steady footing, and surviving each day with little optimism about what lay ahead. Determined to honor her memory, Damon spoke honestly about his mistakes during a gathering held in her honor and accepted responsibility for the choices he had made. In the months that followed, he volunteered at the local food pantry funded by Evie’s charitable donations and tried to repay the kindness she had shown him.
