Kamala Harris delivered her first major public speech since leaving office at the Emerge 20th Anniversary Gala in San Francisco, where she criticized the Trump administration, describing its tariff policies and disregard for court rulings as the cause of a “man-made economic crisis.”
In her remarks, she highlighted the importance of civic engagement and praised everyday Americans who defend democratic values. She also warned that the system of checks and balances in the United States is “starting to weaken,” suggesting the country could be moving toward a constitutional crisis. Emphasizing resilience, she told the audience that “courage is contagious” and encouraged continued participation in protecting democracy.
The speech sparked immediate and divided responses online. Supporters praised her message as passionate and strong, while critics questioned her delivery and tone, describing it as uneven or overly theatrical. Others viewed it as emotionally impactful and timely.
Her address came on the same night Donald Trump appeared in a primetime ABC interview, where he highlighted his administration’s policies, including stricter immigration enforcement, lower prices, and what he described as national economic recovery. He reiterated his “America First” stance and criticized both the media and previous leadership.
Meanwhile, Doug Emhoff, Harris’s husband, announced he had been removed from the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Council, calling the decision politicized and pledging to continue his advocacy against hate and antisemitism.
