Authorities are still investigating the fatal runway incident at Denver International Airport after a man entered a restricted area and was struck by a departing Frontier Airlines aircraft. The event took place late on May 8, 2026, as Frontier Flight 4345 was preparing to leave for Los Angeles with over 200 passengers on board. Airport officials reported that emergency teams responded immediately after the aircraft encountered an engine-related problem following the impact. Smoke was later observed inside the cabin, prompting an emergency evacuation using slides. Several passengers sustained minor injuries during the evacuation, though most were later rebooked onto another flight.
Investigators identified the individual as 41-year-old Michael Mott. Preliminary findings suggest he deliberately accessed the active runway after breaching the airport’s perimeter fence. Officials noted that security systems had detected movement near the fence earlier, but it was initially believed to be triggered by wildlife. Authorities are now reviewing surveillance footage and runway camera data to determine how the breach occurred so close to the aircraft’s departure.
Reports indicate that Mott had a history of personal difficulties, including homelessness and prior arrests spanning many years. Court records referenced by media outlets describe a long criminal history involving multiple charges. However, investigators emphasized that their main focus is reconstructing the sequence of events leading to the runway intrusion and assessing whether airport security procedures need improvement to prevent similar incidents.
The medical examiner later ruled the death a suicide, according to local reports.
In response, airport officials and federal agencies have launched a wider review of security measures and emergency response protocols at the airport. Authorities expressed condolences to those affected, including passengers, airline staff, emergency responders, and the individual’s family. The National Transportation Safety Board and other agencies continue to examine evidence, including surveillance footage and airport operations, as the investigation continues.
