Sophie arrived at her cousin Emily’s engagement dinner after work, tired but hoping for a pleasant evening with family. The restaurant was elegant and lively, filled with laughter, fine dining, and polished conversation. But her mother, Carol, greeted her with a cold expression and quietly instructed her to sit at the children’s table near the kitchen. Embarrassed but unwilling to create tension on Emily’s special night, Sophie complied.
