Donald Trump’s niece has raised a series of serious claims about the president’s declining health, bringing renewed attention to ongoing concerns about his physical and cognitive condition.
Easter weekend speculation gains momentum
Over Easter weekend, a wave of rumors spread rapidly, showing how quickly unverified claims can circulate. The speculation intensified after Trump missed several scheduled public appearances—an unusual move during a major holiday.
Within hours, social media was flooded with theories ranging from health concerns to extreme claims that he had died or was secretly being treated at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. Some posts even mentioned supposed road closures and restricted airspace near the facility, though none of this was confirmed by officials.
His temporary absence created an information vacuum that speculation quickly filled. At the same time, there were signs he remained active—reporters noted routine White House operations, including a Marine posted outside the West Wing, often seen as an indicator the president is on-site. Trump also continued posting online about policy issues like immigration and foreign affairs.
Questions over a ‘mysterious lump’
Speculation also grew after observers noticed what appeared to be a lump under Trump’s jacket during public appearances. Online users suggested it might be a left ventricular assist device (LVAD), a mechanical heart pump.
However, medical experts have dismissed this theory as highly unlikely, noting such a device requires major surgery and recovery. Still, the discussion reflects ongoing scrutiny of his health.
Bruising and medical explanations
Further attention has been drawn to visible bruising on Trump’s hands during events. The White House initially attributed this to frequent handshaking combined with aspirin use for heart health.
Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt explained the marks as minor tissue damage from constant public interaction. Later appearances of similar bruising, however, were addressed more vaguely, raising additional questions.
Officials have confirmed one condition: chronic venous insufficiency, which can cause mild swelling in the legs. While described as common and not serious, it occurs when veins struggle to return blood efficiently to the heart. The administration stated tests found no signs of more serious vascular disease.
Why presidential health matters
Beyond public curiosity, questions about a president’s health carry constitutional importance. If a president dies in office, the vice president—currently JD Vance—would immediately assume power.
Additionally, the 25th Amendment to the United States Constitution outlines procedures for transferring authority if a president becomes unable to perform their duties. These provisions help explain why such speculation draws intense attention.
Medical experts voice concern
Dr. Jonathan Reiner, a former White House cardiologist, recently pointed to footage showing Trump appearing to briefly fall asleep during a meeting.
He suggested the behavior could indicate excessive daytime sleepiness and recommended evaluation. He also raised concerns about aspirin use and moments where Trump appeared unwell during public remarks.
Niece speaks out
Mary Trump has also publicly questioned the president’s mental sharpness. In a video, she pointed to instances where he appeared confused, forgetful, or unfocused.
She argued that behaviors often dismissed as personality quirks—such as rambling, misnaming people, or straying off topic—could instead signal deeper cognitive decline. She also referenced unusual moments, including a reported instance of Trump walking on the White House roof, which drew media attention.
Mary Trump further speculated about possible causes, suggesting anything from age-related decline to conditions like frontotemporal dementia, though she offered no medical diagnosis.
White House response
The administration has strongly rejected these claims. Communications director Steven Cheung dismissed the rumors as baseless and politically motivated.
Officials emphasized that Trump continues to work actively behind the scenes, maintaining a full schedule even when not appearing publicly.
