If you’ve ever spotted a tiny mark or small hole near someone’s ear and assumed it was from an injury, it’s actually something different. This feature is genetic, and here’s what it might signify.
American researcher Neil Shubin, in his book Your Inner Fish, explains that this unique trait could be connected to human evolution. He proposes that long ago, humans shared physical characteristics with fish, and this mark may be a leftover from that evolutionary link.
Only a small percentage of people have it. It usually appears where the ear meets the head and develops during the early stages of fetal growth.
This feature is called a preauricular sinus. It’s harmless, not a disease, and doesn’t affect health—it’s simply a natural trait that may hint at our evolutionary past.
The prevalence of this mark differs by region:
- Africa: about 10%, the highest globally
- Asia: around 4%
- United Kingdom: roughly 0.9%
- United States: about 0.1%, the lowest reported rate
Some researchers suggest that this small opening could be a remnant of gill-like structures from ancient ancestors, pointing to a connection between humans and aquatic life.
While this remains a theory, the mark itself is perfectly normal and offers a fascinating glimpse into human biology.
