I\u2019ve used a wheelchair since I was seventeen. After all these years, I thought I had learned to ignore the stares, uncomfortable pauses, and unwanted sympathy. But nothing could have prepared me for what my sister said to me last week.<\/p>\n

She\u2019s getting married soon, and I had been genuinely excited for her. In fact, I had secretly been planning an all-expenses-paid honeymoon as her wedding gift. I\u2019d been putting money aside ever since she got engaged because I wanted to give her something truly unforgettable.<\/p>\n

Then one evening, she pulled me aside.<\/p>\n

At first, she sounded nervous. Then she asked something I never expected to hear.<\/p>\n

\u201cCould you maybe\u2026 not bring your wheelchair to the ceremony?\u201d<\/p>\n

I stared at her.<\/p>\n

I looked at her and quietly replied:<\/p>\n

\u201cThen I won\u2019t. And if I\u2019m not coming, I guess there\u2019s no reason for me to give you a wedding gift either.\u201d<\/p>\n

She stormed away and slammed the door behind her.<\/p>\n

That gift\u2014the honeymoon I had secretly arranged\u2014had taken months of saving and planning. I never intended to use it against her, but something about her words changed everything.<\/p>\n

Yesterday, she called me again.<\/p>\n

This time, her tone was completely different.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can come,\u201d she said quickly. \u201cThat means I can still get my wedding gift, right?\u201d<\/p>\n
