My daughter-in-law established one strict rule: if I wanted to see my grandson, I had to give her at least 48 hours\u2019 notice. I thought it was a bit extreme, but I followed it without complaint because I didn’t want to create tension.<\/p>\n

Every time I wanted a visit, I’d message her two days ahead, wait for her response, and show up only during the time she approved.<\/p>\n

Then came my grandson’s third birthday.<\/p>\n

I asked three days beforehand if I could stop by and give him his present. She said no.<\/p>\n

Apparently, giving 48 hours\u2019 notice for the gift drop-off wasn’t enough because I hadn’t specifically requested permission to attend the birthday celebration itself.<\/p>\n

I was confused, but I didn’t argue.<\/p>\n

Instead, I wrapped his present, left it on their porch with a birthday card, and drove away.<\/p>\n

That evening, my son called.<\/p>\n

He accused me of being \u201cpassive-aggressive\u201d for leaving the gift outside instead of attending the party.<\/p>\n

I reminded him that his wife had refused my request.<\/p>\n

His response was that I should have \u201ctried harder to work things out with her.\u201d<\/p>\n

Something inside me finally broke.<\/p>\n

So I stopped trying.<\/p>\n

I stopped visiting.<\/p>\n

I stopped asking.<\/p>\n

And then six months of silence passed.<\/p>\n

Last week, my son suddenly called again.<\/p>\n

This time, he sounded frantic.<\/p>\n

\u201cMom, we really need you. There’s an emergency at work. Could you take him for the weekend?\u201d<\/p>\n

I was completely caught off guard.<\/p>\n

Part of me immediately wanted to say yes because I’d missed my grandson terribly.<\/p>\n

But another part of me couldn’t ignore the feeling that they were only contacting me because they needed something.<\/p>\n

I told my son I needed some time to think and ended the call.<\/p>\n

Since then, he’s called several more times.<\/p>\n

Then my daughter-in-law texted me\u2014the first message I’d received from her in months.<\/p>\n

She said they \u201creally need family right now.\u201d<\/p>\n

And now I’m torn.<\/p>\n

Did I make things worse by walking away?<\/p>\n

Should I step in and help after being kept out of my grandson’s life for six months?<\/p>\n
