When my husband and I signed the lease, we thought we’d found an incredible deal.<\/p>\n

The house was spacious, the street was quiet, the schools had excellent reputations, and the rent was significantly cheaper than anything else in the area.<\/p>\n

He raised it to his mouth.<\/p>\n

One piercing blast echoed across the yard.<\/p>\n

Cleaning.<\/p>\n

Repairs.<\/p>\n

The children immediately separated and got to work.<\/p>\n

I stood frozen at my kitchen window, still clutching a dish towel and completely forgetting what I had been doing.<\/p>\n

The following morning, it happened again.<\/p>\n

Five o’clock exactly.<\/p>\n

The whistle.<\/p>\n

The line.<\/p>\n

The inspection.<\/p>\n

Then chores before school.<\/p>\n

I watched children carrying heavy buckets before sunrise.<\/p>\n

Cleaning tools.<\/p>\n
