A mother has spoken publicly about the painful decision to allow a well-known psychiatrist to help end her teenage daughter\u2019s life in the bedroom where she grew up.<\/p>\n

According to reports from The Atlantic<\/em>, Dr. Menno Oosterhoff, a specialist in child and adolescent psychiatry, has been involved in assisting patients with euthanasia for several years. Although the practice is legally permitted in the Netherlands under strict conditions, his work has fueled a major ethical debate throughout Europe about the role of psychiatric euthanasia.<\/p>\n

The Netherlands legalized medically assisted death in 2002. Under the country\u2019s euthanasia laws, doctors may approve a patient\u2019s request if it is voluntary and carefully considered, and if the person is experiencing unbearable suffering with no realistic chance of recovery or alternative treatment options.<\/p>\n

Dr. Oosterhoff focuses mainly on patients suffering from severe psychiatric conditions rather than physical illnesses. He believes that allowing a regulated medical process can prevent people from taking their own lives without assistance and can reduce years of unbearable psychological suffering.<\/p>\n

The issue has sparked strong disagreement. Supporters describe him as a compassionate doctor helping people in extreme distress, while opponents argue that psychiatric euthanasia raises serious moral and safety concerns.<\/p>\n

The debate gained renewed attention after a public television program called \u201cMilou\u2019s Battle Continues\u201d<\/em> shared the story of a 17-year-old girl who turned to Dr. Oosterhoff for help ending her life.<\/p>\n

The psychiatrist\u2019s final words to Milou<\/h3>\n

Milou Verhoof had endured years of intense emotional trauma, including sexual abuse when she was 13 and the near-death illness of her brother. After several suicide attempts and long waits for adequate medical support, she eventually came under Dr. Oosterhoff\u2019s care. On October 2, 2023, her euthanasia procedure took place inside her childhood bedroom.<\/p>\n

Before giving the final injection, Dr. Oosterhoff reportedly told Milou, \u201cGirl, have a good trip,\u201d while her parents were present. Later, during her funeral, he reflected on her suffering by saying, \u201cYou\u2019ve been through so much.\u201d<\/p>\n

Milou\u2019s mother, Mireille Verhoof, defended the decision through email correspondence, explaining that she and her family trusted the doctor\u2019s careful evaluation. She said they believed his conclusion\u2014that Milou could no longer continue living and that each day had become unbearable\u2014matched what they had witnessed themselves as parents.<\/p>\n

The case reflects a growing trend in the Netherlands. While most of the country\u2019s 9,958 euthanasia cases in 2024 involved people with serious physical illnesses, cases involving psychiatric suffering increased from 88 in 2020 to 219 in 2024.<\/p>\n

Assisted death debate spreads to Spain<\/h3>\n

The controversy surrounding medically assisted death has also grown in other European countries, including Spain, following the case of 25-year-old Noelia Castillo Ramos.<\/p>\n

Castillo Ramos became quadriplegic in 2024 after jumping from a building following a gang rape. Before her planned euthanasia procedure, she gave a final television interview in which she said, \u201cI have four days left because on the 26 they will perform euthanasia on me,\u201d drawing national attention to the legal dispute surrounding her decision.<\/p>\n

Her father challenged the procedure in court, claiming that his daughter had a personality disorder and had relied on public mental health services even before the assault.<\/p>\n

Castillo Ramos said the opposition from her family caused her additional emotional suffering, explaining that none of her relatives supported her choice. She questioned why the pain of her family should outweigh her own suffering, saying that while she understood she was causing them grief, she was the one living with the pain every day.<\/p>\n

She argued that the wishes of parents or siblings should not take priority over the suffering and choices of the person directly affected.
