When the owner decided to sell the apartment I had been renting, I had no choice but to move. I’d only lived there for a year, but it had become my peaceful little retreat\u2014bright, quiet, and always scented with lavender candles.<\/p>\n

On my final day, I cleaned every inch of the place. I polished the floors, scrubbed the bathroom until it sparkled, and even left a small bouquet of fresh daisies on the kitchen table.<\/p>\n

It simply felt right to leave the apartment better than I had found it, even if nobody ever noticed.<\/p>\n

The following morning, my phone rang.<\/p>\n

It was my landlady.<\/p>\n

My stomach tightened. I assumed she’d found something damaged or wanted to point out a mistake I’d overlooked.<\/p>\n

“My parents always taught me to leave things better than I found them,” I replied.<\/p>\n

She was quiet for a moment before asking, “Are you always this thoughtful?”<\/p>\n

I wasn’t sure how to answer.<\/p>\n

I admitted that caring for places had always come naturally to me\u2014sometimes even more easily than caring for myself.<\/p>\n

She laughed gently, then asked a question I never expected.<\/p>\n

“How is someone like you still single? You sound like the kind of person anyone would be lucky to meet.”<\/p>\n

Her words caught me completely off guard. No one had ever spoken to me that way before.<\/p>\n

“I have a friend who’s single,” she said. “He’s kind, respectful, and values people the same way you value a home. Would you be open to meeting him?”<\/p>\n

For the first time since moving out, I found myself smiling.<\/p>\n
