For nearly two weeks, I came home from work to the same bizarre sight. A long, bright orange extension cord stretched from my neighbor’s garage across the yard and into the outdoor electrical outlet on the side of my house. The first time I noticed it, I assumed there had to be a simple explanation.<\/p>\n
Maybe he’d plugged into the wrong outlet by mistake. Perhaps he was rushing and hadn’t realized what he’d done. Rather than make an issue out of it, I quietly unplugged the cord and went about my day.<\/p>\n
A few days later, I caught him in the act.<\/p>\n
He was crouched beside my house, plugging the extension cord into my outlet as though it belonged to him.<\/p>\n
“Excuse me,” I said, trying to stay calm. “That’s my electrical outlet. You’re using electricity that’s billed to me.”<\/p>\n
Instead of apologizing, he shrugged and smiled.<\/p>\n
“Come on,” he replied. “It’s only costing you a few cents.”<\/p>\n
As if that somehow justified helping himself to someone else’s electricity.<\/p>\n
I didn’t push the argument. I hate conflict with neighbors, so I convinced myself it was probably a misunderstanding that wouldn’t happen again.<\/p>\n
I was wrong.<\/p>\n
Just two days later, I returned home earlier than usual and found the same orange cord running across my lawn once again. At that point, it became obvious this wasn’t an accident. He knew exactly what he was doing and simply didn’t believe it was a problem.<\/p>\n
So I decided to solve the issue without confrontation. I bought a lockable cover for my outdoor outlet and installed it. It was a simple security measure\u2014nothing more.<\/p>\n
The next surprise arrived the following morning.<\/p>\n
Someone had slipped a folded note through my letterbox.<\/p>\n
Expecting an apology, or at least an explanation, I unfolded it.<\/p>\n
Instead, I found a handwritten complaint accusing me of “locking up the neighborhood outlet.”<\/p>\n
Apparently, my private electrical socket had somehow become community property in his mind.<\/p>\n
The letter went on to explain that because I’d “cut off access,” he would now need to charge his electric bike inside my house whenever the weather was bad.<\/p>\n
Then came the part that left me speechless.<\/p>\n
He instructed me to leave my back gate unlocked that Saturday so he could simply walk into my yard and let himself in.<\/p>\n
I stood in the hallway reading the note again and again, wondering whether someone was playing an elaborate joke.<\/p>\n
Who expects permission to enter another person’s property simply because they can no longer use that person’s electricity for free?<\/p>\n
Despite everything, I still tried to handle the situation reasonably.<\/p>\n
I even suggested splitting the cost of having a licensed electrician install an outdoor outlet on his own property.<\/p>\n
He dismissed the idea immediately.<\/p>\n
“Why bother?” he said. “Yours is closer.”<\/p>\n
Since then, I’ve heard he’s been telling the neighbors that I’m stingy, unfriendly, and causing unnecessary drama over what he calls “a few pennies.”<\/p>\n
But the more I think about it, the less this seems to be about the electricity itself.<\/p>\n
It’s about respecting other people’s boundaries.<\/p>\n
It’s about recognizing that someone else’s home and belongings aren’t there for your personal convenience.<\/p>\n
I’m not looking for an argument or trying to make the situation worse. I simply want to enjoy my own home without worrying about someone helping themselves to my electricity\u2014or expecting unrestricted access to my property.<\/p>\n
So I can’t help but wonder:<\/p>\n
