Inside was a private investigator’s report.<\/p>\n

“My mother hired someone two years ago to dig up dirt on my fianc\u00e9e,” he explained. “When they found nothing, she kept paying them anyway.”<\/p>\n

The church erupted in whispers.<\/p>\n

Then he revealed payment records proving Diane had actually paid his ex-girlfriend to attend family holidays and make me uncomfortable.<\/p>\n

Finally, he held up one last letter.<\/p>\n

“My mother demanded I cancel this wedding or lose my inheritance.”<\/p>\n

Diane’s bouquet slipped from her hands.<\/p>\n

Only then did I understand.<\/p>\n

“You used me as bait,” I whispered to James.<\/p>\n

His face filled with regret.<\/p>\n

“I know.”<\/p>\n

“You knew she’d walk down this aisle dressed as a bride?”<\/p>\n

“Then why didn’t you stop her?”<\/p>\n

He lowered his head.<\/p>\n

“Because if I confronted her then, she’d destroy all the evidence we’d spent weeks collecting.”<\/p>\n

The church sat in stunned silence.<\/p>\n

“I made the worst decision of my life,” he admitted. “I chose exposing her instead of protecting you.”<\/p>\n

I looked into his eyes for a long moment.<\/p>\n

The pain remained, but so did the truth.<\/p>\n

He hadn’t betrayed me.<\/p>\n

He’d made a terrible choice while trying to end years of manipulation once and for all.<\/p>\n

James turned back toward his mother.<\/p>\n

“The investigator’s report, financial records, and bank documents all prove the same thing. You spent years trying to destroy the woman I love while secretly forging Dad’s signature to keep control of money that wasn’t yours.”<\/p>\n

James’s father slowly stood.<\/p>\n

“Everything he said is true.”<\/p>\n
