Then she looked at him again.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re making this harder than it needs to be.\u201d<\/p>\n

Something inside me snapped quietly.<\/p>\n

She turned and saw me standing there.<\/p>\n

For a second, she looked caught.<\/p>\n

Then defensive.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was trying to help him,\u201d she said quickly. \u201cYou\u2019re enabling this.\u201d<\/p>\n

I kept my voice low so Jake wouldn\u2019t have to hear more than he already had.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou don\u2019t talk to him like that,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n
