I was genuinely excited when one of my closest friends announced she was engaged. It felt like such a happy milestone for our friend group, and we spent weeks talking about her upcoming wedding and celebrating with her. But when she finally revealed her plans over the weekend, my excitement quickly gave way to surprise.<\/p>\n

She explained that she wanted to have a completely “free” wedding, inspired by ideas she’d seen on TikTok and Instagram. Instead of paying for vendors, she hoped someone would lend her a large outdoor venue, friends would take care of photography, officiate the ceremony, create invitations, and decorate, while relatives would provide the flowers. Guests would also be assigned specific dishes to bring for a potluck reception. On top of that, she envisioned tents, party favors, speakers, and even live music.<\/p>\n

Initially, I assumed she meant a modest courthouse ceremony or a simple backyard gathering, but her vision was far more elaborate. What made it difficult to understand was that she and her fianc\u00e9 weren’t struggling financially, and his family was also well off. Even so, nearly every expense and responsibility was expected to be absorbed by friends and relatives instead of being paid for by the couple.<\/p>\n

Then she turned to me with a request that caught me completely off guard: she wanted me to bake the wedding cake.<\/p>\n

She sent me photos of elaborate multi-tiered cakes decorated with fondant flowers, edible gold accents, and intricate hand-painted details. The problem was that I’m far from a professional baker. I only bake occasionally as a hobby. I explained that creating something like that would take days of work and still probably wouldn’t resemble the inspiration photos. She smiled and brushed off my concerns, saying perfection didn’t matter because the wedding was supposed to be about everyone contributing.<\/p>\n

That’s when I started feeling uncomfortable.<\/p>\n

What had sounded like a creative community celebration now felt more like an expectation that everyone else would finance and produce her dream wedding. I gently suggested that if keeping costs at zero was truly the goal, a courthouse ceremony or a small elopement might be a more practical choice. I wasn’t trying to criticize her\u2014I simply wanted to be honest about how unrealistic the plan seemed.<\/p>\n

My comment immediately changed the mood.<\/p>\n

She became quiet, looked at me for several moments, and eventually left with another friend. Later that evening, I received a message from that friend saying I’d hurt the bride’s feelings and that perhaps I should have stayed quiet and let reality catch up on its own. Not long afterward, the bride texted me herself with a brief message: “Sorry, don’t worry about the cake.”<\/p>\n

Since then, I’ve been questioning whether I handled the situation the right way.<\/p>\n

Part of me wonders if I should have agreed to help despite knowing how overwhelming the project would have been. She wasn’t trying to be cruel, and she seemed genuinely excited about her wedding. At the same time, I couldn’t ignore the feeling that her expectations placed an unfair burden on everyone around her. I wanted to support my friend, but I also felt it was important to be truthful rather than promise something I couldn’t realistically deliver.<\/p>\n
