I\u2019m Ella, 29, and I honestly need an outside perspective because I still can\u2019t fully process what happened. I\u2019ve been with my boyfriend, Mike, for just over two years. Things between us have been stable, affectionate, and at that point where you naturally start thinking about long-term plans, even engagement.<\/p>\n

So when he told me it was time to meet his parents, I was genuinely excited\u2014nervous, but in a good way.<\/p>\n

Last night was the dinner. We met at a decent mid-range restaurant, the kind where you dress nicely but don\u2019t overthink it.<\/p>\n

Mike\u2019s parents were already there. He introduced me, and before I could even settle into the conversation, he looked at me and said, completely serious: \u201cHope you brought your wallet. We\u2019re starving.\u201d<\/p>\n

At first, I assumed it was a joke. It didn\u2019t feel like one, but I tried to give him the benefit of the doubt.<\/p>\n

Then his father stood up, acting overly formal, and said, \u201cIf she\u2019s already struggling now, imagine the future.\u201d<\/p>\n

I just sat there confused, trying to understand if this was some kind of setup. His mother looked at me with a kind of pity and said, \u201cYou need a partner who contributes.\u201d<\/p>\n

That\u2019s when things shifted from awkward to surreal. Mike then told me I would be paying for the entire meal and that it was \u201ca test\u201d he would explain later.<\/p>\n

Apparently, this was their family\u2019s way of evaluating whether a partner is \u201cindependent\u201d and not financially dependent on their son. They framed it like some kind of tradition, but it essentially meant I was expected to cover the bill while Mike didn\u2019t reach for his wallet at all.<\/p>\n

The whole situation felt contradictory and uncomfortable.<\/p>\n

Instead of arguing, I paid only for my own meal, excused myself, and left.<\/p>\n

Since then, Mike has been calling me dramatic and saying I failed to meet his family\u2019s expectations. His parents also seem to believe I didn\u2019t pass their so-called test.<\/p>\n

Now I\u2019m left wondering if I overreacted or if this is as unreasonable as it felt in the moment. Part of me thinks this is a major red flag, and I\u2019m seriously considering whether I should walk away entirely.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
