My parents spent $60,000 on my sister\u2019s wedding three years ago, so when I got engaged last year, I assumed they would support me in a similar way. Instead, they gave me $2,000.<\/p>\n

When I asked why there was such a difference, my mom responded bluntly: \u201cYou\u2019re older. You can manage on your own.\u201d<\/p>\n

I didn\u2019t argue. I simply thanked them, accepted the money, and began planning a more modest wedding with my fianc\u00e9.<\/p>\n

Two months before the wedding, my sister called and said, \u201cThis cheap wedding is going to embarrass the whole family.\u201d I calmly replied, \u201cNoted,\u201d and ended the call.<\/p>\n

On the wedding day, however, everything surprised them.<\/p>\n

With our limited budget, my fianc\u00e9 and I created something meaningful\u2014a small outdoor ceremony on a friend\u2019s property, handmade decorations, a potluck-style reception with dishes brought by close friends, and a simple playlist instead of a DJ. It was personal, warm, and filled with love.<\/p>\n

What caught my family off guard most was my speech. I thanked everyone who contributed time, effort, and creativity to make the day special, mentioning people individually and acknowledging what they had done. I did not mention my parents\u2019 financial contribution.<\/p>\n

Afterward, my mother pulled me aside, upset. \u201cYou made us look like we didn\u2019t help at all.\u201d<\/p>\n

I responded calmly, \u201cYou gave what you thought was appropriate. I\u2019m just grateful for the people who truly showed up for us.\u201d<\/p>\n

Since then, my sister has stopped speaking to me, and other relatives have taken sides.<\/p>\n
