Amy was the underprivileged girl in my class.<\/p>\n

She rarely brought lunch. Her shoes never seemed to fit quite right, either too large or too tight. Other kids mocked her thrift-store clothes and the way she acted like she wasn\u2019t starving.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m not sure why I chose to sit beside her that first day of seventh grade. Maybe it was because she looked like she expected everyone to avoid her. Maybe I was tired of hearing people laugh at her.<\/p>\n

After that, I started bringing two sandwiches to school.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy mom always packs extra,\u201d I\u2019d say, sliding one onto her desk.<\/p>\n

She never accepted it immediately. First, she\u2019d study my face, almost as if she expected a joke to follow. When she realized I was sincere, she\u2019d give me this tiny, delicate smile and quietly thank me.<\/p>\n

For the next two years, we were inseparable.<\/p>\n

Then one Monday, she didn\u2019t come to school.<\/p>\n

By the end of the week, her desk had been emptied.<\/p>\n

No farewell. No address. She was simply gone.<\/p>\n

Life carried on, as it always does. High school, college, marriage, work.<\/p>\n

Twelve years later, I found myself lying in a hospital bed, staring at the ceiling and fighting off fear. I had suddenly fallen ill, and surgery was scheduled for the next morning.<\/p>\n

A nurse entered the room with a clipboard in hand.<\/p>\n

I barely glanced at her until she spoke my name.<\/p>\n

Something about her voice felt familiar.<\/p>\n

I turned toward her.<\/p>\n

It was Amy.<\/p>\n

She looked older, naturally\u2014more self-assured, her hair neatly pulled back, a hospital badge clipped to her scrubs. But her eyes hadn\u2019t changed at all.<\/p>\n

I went still when she smiled gently and said, \u201cYou\u2019re going to be okay. I promise.\u201d<\/p>\n

My throat tightened. \u201cAmy?\u201d<\/p>\n

She laughed softly, far more confident than I remembered from school. \u201cI wondered if you\u2019d recognize me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Before I could say more, she calmly adjusted my IV and reviewed my chart.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou became a nurse?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n

She nodded. \u201cAfter we moved away, life got difficult. But there was one person who made me feel seen\u2026 like I mattered.\u201d She looked directly at me. \u201cI wanted to give that feeling to someone else.\u201d<\/p>\n

My eyes filled with tears.<\/p>\n

The next morning, right before surgery, she squeezed my hand.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou used to save me a seat,\u201d she said quietly. \u201cNow I\u2019ll be here when you wake up.\u201d<\/p>\n

And she was.<\/p>\n

When I opened my eyes hours later\u2014weak, groggy, but alive\u2014she was standing beside my bed.<\/p>\n

\u201cTold you,\u201d she whispered.<\/p>\n

Recovery was tough, but she checked on me every chance she got. Before I left the hospital, she handed me a small paper bag.<\/p>\n

Inside was a sandwich.<\/p>\n

\u201cI packed extra,\u201d she said with a grin.<\/p>\n

I laughed through my tears.<\/p>\n

Back then, I thought I was only sharing lunch with a lonely classmate.<\/p>\n
