I\u2019ve always thought of myself as a trusting parent\u2014I don\u2019t hover or snoop, and I like to think my daughter knows that.<\/p>\n

Still, that trust can be tested. One Sunday afternoon, I heard laughter and quiet whispers coming from behind her closed bedroom door.<\/p>\n

My daughter is fourteen, and so is her boyfriend. He\u2019s kind, polite, and surprisingly respectful for his age. He always greets us when he arrives, takes off his shoes, and thanks me before he leaves.<\/p>\n

He visits every Sunday, and they usually spend hours in her room. I try to remind myself they\u2019re just spending time together, but when the laughter softens and the door stays shut, my imagination starts to run.<\/p>\n

That day, I told myself to stay calm and respect her privacy, like I always do.<\/p>\n

But then the doubts crept in\u2014what if something was going on that I should know about? What if I was being too trusting? Before I knew it, I was walking slowly down the hallway.<\/p>\n

When I reached her door, I carefully pushed it open just a crack.<\/p>\n

Soft music played in the background. They were sitting cross-legged on the floor, surrounded by notebooks, highlighters, and math assignments.<\/p>\n

She was explaining something, completely focused, barely noticing me at first.<\/p>\n

Her boyfriend listened intently, nodding as she walked him through the problem. The plate of cookies she\u2019d taken earlier sat untouched on her desk.<\/p>\n

She looked up and smiled, a bit puzzled. \u201cMom? Did you need something?\u201d<\/p>\n

I quietly closed the door and leaned against the wall, feeling both relieved and a little embarrassed.<\/p>\n
