When my son was taken to the ICU after an accident, I urgently requested five days off from my boss. He refused, insisting I \u201cseparate work from personal life.\u201d I didn\u2019t argue\u2014I just came in the next morning with a different approach.<\/p>\n

I carried a stack of carefully prepared folders labeled Emergency Transfer Proposal<\/em>. When I entered the meeting room, the atmosphere shifted immediately. I placed the documents in front of my boss and explained that everything was already handled\u2014every task completed overnight so the team wouldn\u2019t fall behind.<\/p>\n

I had done it all from the hospital, between updates from nurses, while staying by my son\u2019s side. Then I calmly said, \u201cYou asked me to separate work and personal life, so I did. My son needed me there. The work still got done.\u201d<\/p>\n

Silence filled the room as he reviewed the documents, his expression changing as he realized what had happened. After a pause, he said, \u201cYou didn\u2019t have to do this.\u201d<\/p>\n

I replied, \u201cExactly. No one should have to.\u201d<\/p>\n

He asked me to step out for a moment. When I returned, his tone had shifted. For the first time, he acknowledged that leadership is about more than productivity\u2014it\u2019s also about understanding people.<\/p>\n

\u201cGo be with your son,\u201d he said. \u201cTake the time you need.\u201d<\/p>\n

When I eventually came back to work, things weren\u2019t perfect, but they had changed. The environment felt more thoughtful, more human. Sometimes, the clearest way to teach compassion is to live it.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
